A New Season for UHEA: Homeschool Hub Utah Welcomes Back an Old Friend

Today's spotlight is on a group that has been a big part of Utah’s homeschooling story for decades: the Utah Home Education Association (UHEA). If you’re new to the Utah homeschool scene, you might not have heard much about UHEA recently. Although they were a powerhouse in Utah’s homeschool community for many years, UHEA has seen a quieter period over the last six years, with fewer activities and a reduced leadership presence.

However, there’s exciting news: UHEA is being revitalized! Under the leadership of Chair Nina Wolf and other passionate board members, UHEA is coming back strong, with plans to reinvigorate their advocacy, events, and support for homeschool families across the state. This comes at a crucial time, with new challenges and threats to homeschooling on the rise. UHEA’s renewed presence is a reassuring sign that homeschooling in Utah will continue to be protected and celebrated.

Many homeschool veterans remember UHEA as a community hub, especially their annual conventions, which used to be some of the biggest gatherings for homeschool families in Utah. These conventions brought people together for workshops, resources, and connections that inspired families and strengthened their homeschooling journey. It’s so exciting to see the groundwork being laid to bring these traditions back, building on UHEA’s past to meet today’s needs.

Here at Homeschool Hub Utah, we want to ensure new homeschoolers know about UHEA’s contributions and traditions. They have a history of advocacy and service to Utah homeschoolers that’s worth knowing about, especially now as they gear up for a fresh start.

For those beginning their homeschool journey, here are some helpful resources UHEA offers:

  • Affidavit: A little-known fact about Utah is that while you need to submit a homeschool affidavit, there’s flexibility in how you can do this. Many think they must use the affidavit the school district provides, but that’s not the case. You can create your own affidavit by writing a letter stating that your child will be homeschooled and that you are solely responsible for their education. The affidavit should include a declaration that you are responsible for your child’s education and that your child will be homeschooled. Some parents also include a statement requesting that their child’s information not be included in directory listings.

Submit this affidavit to your local school board for each child. While it doesn’t need to be notarized, it should be signed. Within 30 days, the school board should issue an exemption certificate, which you should keep for your records. You can also use a model affidavit from UHEA (coming Dec 18), HSLDA ($) or from the Utah State Board of Education. Many local districts have preferred forms as well.

  • Homeschooling FAQ: For families just beginning their homeschool journey, the Homeschooling FAQ offers tips and guidance on how to begin.

  • Utah Homeschool Laws: Familiarize yourself with the legal guidelines for homeschooling in Utah with the Utah Homeschool Laws page.

And if you’re looking for a graduation ceremony, Homeschool Hub Utah will be hosting one next year! It’s a wonderful way to honor the achievements of our homeschooling students. You can find more details on our graduation plans here.

Also, a heads up! UHEA’s website is currently undergoing some renovations to get it back up to speed. You know how it goes—like all of us, sometimes old things need to go through an awkward growth spurt to reach a new level of excellence. An organization that started before the internet was really a thing has to work through a few bugs! We’re looking forward to seeing their online resources evolve, and you can check out the current updates on their website here.

Stay tuned, as Homeschool Hub Utah will be sharing more about UHEA’s upcoming plans and resources, so you won’t miss out on their new offerings. We’re thrilled to support UHEA as they begin this exciting new season!
