As homeschool mothers, we have the privilege and responsibility of setting the rhythms and routines for our families. Just as there is established order and cycles in the natural world, we can thoughtfully create patterns that nurture our children's bodies, minds, and spirits.
Speaker Misty Foxley shared valuable insights, at an LDSHE homeschool conference, from her own homeschooling journey that can help us establish healthy rhythms in our homes.
Misty and Derek Foxley homeschooled their six children for 24 years across four continents. Their grown children, now pursuing higher education and non-traditional interests, continue their family’s commitment to lifelong learning. With a deep passion for education, Misty actively shares her homeschooling insights and experiences, contributing to her community and church.
In her session, she emphasized the importance of:
Sleep - Ensuring our children (and we as parents!) get adequate, consistent sleep is foundational. This supports academic performance, emotional regulation, and overall wellbeing.
Nutrition - Feeding our families nourishing whole foods, limiting processed items, and eating meals together can dramatically impact behavior and cognitive function. It's a gradual process, but well worth the effort.
Activity - Finding ways for our kids to be physically active, get fresh air and sunshine daily is crucial. This could look like outdoor play, family walks, or even dancing together.
Devotion - Establishing consistent rhythms for spiritual nourishment, whether scripture study, prayer, or other faith practices, grounds our families.
Relationships - Strong, loving relationships are what truly bring happiness, as confirmed by extensive research. We can be intentional about fostering connection.
Misty acknowledged that creating these rhythms takes work and discipline, but the benefits are immense. She says, "As we align our families' patterns with eternal principles, we provide our children invaluable gifts that will bless them for a lifetime."
Misty warmly invites you, fellow homeschool mothers, to thoughtfully evaluate and adjust the rhythms in your home. With the Lord's guidance, you can cultivate an environment that nourishes your family's physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.
